  • Jesus Understands You

Jesus Understands You See how Jesus understands you. Previous Item Next Item Jesus understands you. Jesus is human. He had a mom and a dad, just like everyone else who’s ever lived. He lived and died just like all of us will. He ate, and slept. He cried, and bled just like us. He probably even smelled bad sometimes. Author and Pastor AW Tozer writes, “God is a Person, and in the deep of His mighty nature He thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires and suffers as any other person may.” The Bible says we don’t feel anything that Jesus doesn’t understand. “He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin.” Hebrews 4:16 The Message Version Jesus was a refugee. When he was still just a child, he had to flee his home with his family in the middle of the night for fear of being killed by an unjust government. He lived as an immigrant in Egypt for years. He knows what it feels like to be displaced, to be far from home, to be an outsider. When Jesus’ close friend, Lazarus, died, the Bible tells us that he wept. He knew that in just a few moments, he would bring this friend back to life. He was about to do something amazing and totally unbelievable. A miracle. Still he wept and felt grief just like we do. Jesus even felt tired. The creator of the universe was known to take naps. In the Bible, we see that Jesus often took time away from the crowds that followed him. In one story, he even falls asleep while a raging storm tosses the small boat he and his friends are in. Don’t worry, his disciples wake him and he instantly calms the wind and the waves for them so that they too may rest. He understands the feeling of abandonment because he was abandoned. He was betrayed by a close friend and because of that, was arrested and wrongfully imprisoned. His friends ran away and pretended they didn’t know him. He stood alone at his trial. He was alone when he died. Jesus was abused. The Gospel of John 19:1-3 says, “Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ And they slapped him in the face.” While Jesus was hanging on the cross, he asked his best friend John to look after his mom. In the midst of his suffering, he was concerned for the welfare of his family. There’s no pain or trial we can go through that Jesus doesn’t understand. He was poor. He was misunderstood. He suffered physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He doesn’t always take away our pain, but he does understand it. He understands you. To read more, try this article on Tim Keller's Blog .

  • Jesus Is Our Redeemer

Jesus Is Our Redeemer Learn how Jesus is our Redeemer Previous Item Next Item If you look up the word “redeem” in the dictionary, you will see that it says “to buy or pay off, to recover, to convert, to fulfill.” If you look up the word “redeemer”, it will say, “One who redeems,” and then it says, “Jesus Christ.” Even the google dictionary knows who our redeemer is…so what does that mean? What do we mean when we say that Jesus is our redeemer? Simply put, whether you know it or not, you have a debt that needs to be paid and the debt is called sin. If you’ve ever done anything wrong, which of course we all have, then your books are in the red and you are responsible to pay that debt off, your debt to the God who created you. Here’s the problem - you have no way to do that by yourself because you’re going to keep making mistakes, keep falling short, keep needing to make amends, sacrifices, payments to clear your debt with God who is good and perfect and unattainable. It can’t be done. Here’s the good news. Jesus can pay your debt. In fact, he already has. Jesus never sinned, not once ever, he’s perfect and yet he agreed to live and die to pay the debt that was rightfully ours, to redeem it, to redeem us. If you’ve read much of the Old Testament, which is that first chunk of the Bible, the part before Jesus is born, then you might have read about how the Hebrew people had to make sacrifices to God for their sins - it could have been a lamb or a goat or something like that - gross! And those sacrifices didn’t work very well, it wasn’t a great system because how can a lamb pay for my sin? - its just an animal. But Jesus - the perfect and holy son of God - he can pay for my sin once and for all, forever. He’s a perfect sacrifice. He’s the redeemer. He’s the lamb of God and here’s the best part. When Jesus - that perfect, holy God who was so good to die to redeem us from our sins, to pay the price we should have paid, when he suffered and died on the cross for all that - He didn’t stay dead. Death couldn’t keep him. Our sin couldn’t hold him down. After he died for the sins of the world, the Bible says he uttered three words - it is finished. And it was. Three days later Jesus rose from the dead, having redeemed anyone who would ask him to forgive their sins and follow him. 1 Corinthians 1:30b says, “Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. “ Or another translation is , “ It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” For further reading, check out A.W. • Jesus is God

Jesus is God Learn how Jesus is God Previous Item Next Item In the Gospel of John, John, who was a disciple and a close friend of Jesus refers to him as The Word - eternal and everlasting, all-knowing and all-powerful. In chapter one he writes, "In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it." (John 1:1-5) John saw what many throughout the centuries have since come to understand, that while Jesus is fully human just like all of us, he’s also completely God. The apostle Paul came to this knowledge in a very different way because while he was an enemy of the church seeking to kill Christians, God stopped him in his tracks, blinded him, and set him on a new path of following Jesus and spreading the Gospel throughout the known world. In his letter to the Phillippian church Paul writes, Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
